Duffy Tops UK Chart With Mercy Single
Soul singer Duffy, who came second in the BBC's Sound of 2008 search for new talent, has knocked Basshunter off the top spot this week to take the number one position with her new single, Mercy, on downloads alone. Mercy is not available to buy on CD and vinyl until 28 February 2008.
Nickelback retained their position at number two with Rockstar while Basshunter's Now You're Gone slipped to number three after five weeks at number one. David Jordan climbed from five to number four with Sun Goes Down ahead of Adele's Chasing Pavements at number five. Adele topped the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll, ahead of this week's number one Duffy.
New entries included H Two O with their two-step bassline track, What's It Gonna Be in at number seven, out on the same label as last week's number one, Basshunter. The Feeling climbed to number nine with I Thought It Was Over and Goldfrapp climbed to 10 from number 18.
Meanwhile, Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static album kept it's position at the top of the UK album chart, keeping Nickelback's All The Right Reasons at number two. The re-release of Michael Jackson's Thriller album to celebrate it's 25th anniversary entered the chart at number three while Morrissey's Greatest Hits album entered the chart at number five.

Sam, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly: ilikemusic because... Music is a special thing that is not like anything else in the world. You might argue that you can translate emotions through films and through books but anyone can make music, whether that be humming or singing along to the radio, it’s something that gives enjoyment and positivity to many people.
Hard-Fi: ilikemusic because... what else is there to like?!
Leon Jean-Marie: ilikemusic because... It transcends. It really creates emotion with someone. That feeling it gives you, it goes through boundaries. To create something, it just breaks through all the walls. When you connect with a song, that is it, that is magic isn't it?
Aaron, The Delays: ilikemusic because... It makes everything seem like an incredible film. And it does - it actually does! hahaha! I told the truth and everything....hahaha!
Peter Cincotti: ilikemusic because... Of what the world would be without it. It’d be a very scary place. I think we’d all be screwed.
Steve, Hard-Fi: ilikemusic because... Life is not worth living without it. Everything else could disappear, but music is the one thing that always remains with me throughout my entire life.
Estelle: ilikemusic because... It enables me to get my feelings out and it’s borderline therapy for me. Music makes me feel.
