Elbow Win the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize

'This is quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us' announced Guy Garvey, the front man of five-piece Elbow, the 2008 winners of the Nationwide Mercury Prize, perhaps the most coveted music award in the country.

The winning album, The Seldom Seen Kid, was the fourth album release from Elbow who have already had an impressive career. Forming in 1990 the band have had four studio albums, four EPs and ten top fifty singles in the UK. Alongside Radiohead, their musical torch had been burning the longest out of all the nominees for this years prize. Unlike Radiohead, however, they have remained on the side lines of the public musical spectrum for some time, never quite dipping their toe fully into the mainstream pond, but continuing to be recognised for their talent, passion and innovative sound.

The general atmosphere at the award ceremony after the announcement of the winner was one of content. Elbow deserved to win. They have been making great music for a long time and the breadth of their contribution to music deserved to be recognised, even if the decision, for some, did seem to be the 'safe' bet.
