'If a couple of acts would have won, I would have been gutted, but for Elbow, it's amazing, and they're such nice people, so I'm really, really pleased. They're the kind of artists that I want to be. I want to have longevity. For them to win it is quite inspiring. They were the best act at Glastonbury this year. For them to come to Glastonbury and be phenomenal and then come here and win, it just reminds me of what music is.' Adele.
And so it seems longevity is the word on everyone's lips. After a lengthy trawl through the music industry, with it's up's (Elbow were nominated for a Mercury in 2001 for debut album Asleep in the Back, released on V2) and down's (Elbow were dropped from V2 in 2006) they currently stand testament to the fact that you don't need to release a debut album packed to the brim with chords that have never been heard and lyrics syphoned through an oscillating thesaurus to win. Infact, in our current society of quick fads and momentary obsessions, a win for Elbow is perhaps more re-freshing than a win for a debut act. It has given everyone a little more faith.
