Elbow Win the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize
Prior to the announcement of the winner, the night was cram packed with a number of excellent live performances from a handful of the nominees. Elbow closed preceedings with a performance of The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver, which burned with the weight of their talent, drive and energy. Guy Garvey pushed his enigmatic, dishevelled charm upon the audience and managed to ensure that when they were announced as winners, everyone was certain it was deserved.
The Last Shadow Puppets opened the ceremony with The Age Of The Understatement which had its seames woven into the full bodied blanket of an orchestral ensemble, which added a richer sound to their retro-indie anthem.
