Elbow Win the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize

Laura Marling's performance of Night Terrors was delicately crafted and tip toed around the corners of our expectations with a mature charm, effortlessly reducing the room to silence.

Neon Neon performed a mash-up of tracks I Told Her On Alderaan and Trick For Treat, and were joined unexpectedly on stage by Har Mar Superstar, who proceeded to rap, whilst doing a head-stand, over their instumental backing.

Estelle bombarded the audience with Pretty Please, laced with charisma, sass and confidence and British Sea Power jolted their way through No Lucifer, along with their violinist, cornet player and the London Bulgarian Choir.

Initial favourite to win, Burial, failed to make an appearance. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss gracefully accepted their award, with Robert announcing that Alison would keep the award until christmas and then they would swap, and Colin Greenwood and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead collected their nomination after a screening of a specially recorded version of Nude, from their nominated album In Rainbows.
