Elbow Win the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize

Portico Quartet, the four-piece modern Jazz group from London, gave a sterling performance, allowing all those who had not seen their use of the hang, a 21st Century percussion instrument, the opportunity to do so. Duncan, the hang and percussionist of the group, seemed happy with the result of the evening and divulged some details of their next album.

'We've got some new stuff. We need to write a load more. Our writing is changing a little bit. We all live together. Someone will have an idea, then we all just get in, make a mess of it and just jam. The new album will hopefully have a bit of different instrumentation, some different textures.'

It seems that the glamorous award ceremony that was The Nationwide Mercury Prize was just a pit-stop for many of the hard working nominees. Rachel Unthank and The Winterset gave a performance of Blue Bleezing Blind Drunk from their nominated album The Bairns, which burned with an intensity formed from the roots of traditional folk and moulded and shaped in the palms of a fresh generation. Rachel Unthank spoke of the bands future plans.
