Luckily, the immensely talented and very charming Adele is currently working on her new album, the follow up to 19, her debut album shortlisted for the prize.
'I'm writing for it at the moment. I've written six songs, four are really, really s**t, two are really great. There's a saying in the industry that you have your whole life to write your first album and three months to write your second. Luckily I've done more than what myself and my label expected. So I'm not being rushed, I've been given time.'
The event was hosted, as is custom, by Jools Holland, whose passion for the Nationwide Mercury Prize is found in his belief that it benefits not only the nominated artists, but the music fans as well.
'The prize has always tried to do the same thing. It tries to celebrate the best in whatever new music has been written that year. It also gives people a chance to catch up if they haven't been listening to ilikemusic, or listening to the radio, or whatever else.
