Ranglin is widely credited as one of the original progenitors of ska music, his playing drawing heavily on Caribbean influences as well as jazz. A massively prolific session player, particularly with the famous Studio One label, often referred to as the 'Motown of Jamaica', he has recorded with the likes of Monty Alexander, Jimmy Cliff and the Skatalites, as well as playing as Ronnie Scott's own house guitarist for some nine months in 1964.
October 15th: Ernest Ranglin and Nu Troop (£30 - £46)
For this first of two nights, Ranglin will be playing with Nu Troop, the amazingly talented hard-swinging band formed by Gary Crosby O.B.E., co-founder of Dune Music, bassist and bandleader - he also happens to be Ernest Ranglin's nephew. Famed for their interpretations of classic jazz albums as well as their own material and featuring Abram Wilson on trumpet, Denys Baptiste on saxophone, Andrew McCormack on piano and Rod Youngs on drums, they will present an evening of straight-ahead jazz music with Ernest in the guest spot.
October 16th: Ernest Ranglin and Jazz Jamaica (£25 - £46)
For the second of Ernest Ranglin's nights in collaboration with his nephew Gary Crosby, he will be playing with the renowned Jazz Jamaica ensemble. Yet another product of the hugely productive Dune Music company, Crosby set up Jazz Jamaica in the early '90s, blending jazz with ska and reggae to create a unique style of uplifting, feel-good music covering a great range of styles. Their previous projects have included 'Motorcity Roots', covering tunes from the Motown catalogue and 'Tighten Up', their brilliant take on Trojan Records' releases. Always a crowd-pleaser, the addition of Ranglin's stunning guitar work will take this gig to a whole new level - audiences can expect something special tonight…
