George Michael To Play First Wembley Stadium Gig
George Michael is set to play the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium. The legendary pop star will perform at the newly revamped 90,000 capacity venue on June 9th 2007 as part of his UK and Europe stadium tour.
George played the old stadium many times, from Live Aid in 1985 and Wham's farewell concert in 1986 to Net Aid in 2000.
The new look Wembley stadium had been due to open in August 2005, then in 2006, with Robbie Williams and Bon Jovi booked to play gigs there. However, they were forced to change venues because of delays to the opening of the stadium.
"George Michael is no stranger to this great stage having performed at the old stadium with both Wham at Live Aid and as a solo artist. This is a fitting first gig in the new stadium. We are looking forward to putting the stadium back on the world map as a major music destination," said MD of Wembley Stadium, Alex Horne.
It had been thought that Muse would be the first band to play the revamped stadium, but they will in fact play Wembley a week after George Michael on June 16th 2007.
The £757m venue is expected to open with the FA Cup final on May 19th.
