Guiness 250 Celebrations
24 September 2009 will be no ordinary day - the Black Eyed Peas, Estelle, Kasabian and other big names in music will join the makers of Guiness beer and hundreds of thousands of Guiness lovers around the world to raise a toast to Arthur Guinness, the man who gave us the black stuff. This year marks the 250th anniversary of when he signed a 9,000 year lease on the legendary St. James's Gate brewery. Global celebrations will include a Dublin-based party led by some outstanding music acts on 24 September, with satellite events in New York, Lagos, Yaoundé and Kuala Lumpur.
The passion and energy of Arthur's Day kicks off in Dublin, the spiritual home of Guiness, which will be brought to life with performances from UK acts The Undertones, Soul II Soul, The Enemy, Mystery Jets, Reverend & the Makers, The Wombats, D'Banj, renowned DJ David Holmes, Mongrel, Noah & the Whale and Johnny Flynn (further artists still to be announced) at the famous Guiness Storehouse and bars and pubs across the city. With hundreds of opportunities to win tickets to the gig itself, as well as the opportunity to view the concert at your local pub (the concert will be streamed live via Pub TV to thousands of pubs throughout the UK), everyone will be able to join in the festivities and raise a pint to Arthur Guinness.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to win VIP tickets to the live gig in Dublin by texting 'Arthur' to 81759, or by logging onto www.guinness.com from 13th May (see notes to editor for details of prize package). Further opportunities to win tickets will be unveiled over the upcoming months.
The Arthur Guiness Fund
Iconic artists and Guiness lovers including Sir Bob Geldof, Guy Ritchie, Jerry Hall and Sophie Dahl will also raise a pint of Guiness on Arthur's Day at 17.59 (Dublin time) in recognition of the achievements of Arthur Guinness and his family, who were responsible for some of the most well known acts of benevolence in Ireland. The next philanthropic step for the Guinness Company is the establishment of the Arthur Guiness Fund, which aims to enable and empower individuals with skills and opportunities to deliver a measured benefit to their communities. Guiness & Co. will donate €5 million to the Arthur Guinness Fund, which will be active from September 2009.
Paul Cornell, GB Guinness Marketing Manager said:
"Reaching the 250th anniversary is an amazing and thrilling milestone for us/the makers of Guinness. The ongoing energy, enthusiasm and dedication to perfection has led to a passionate following with 10 million glasses of Guinness being enjoyed every day across the globe. We are inviting our fans to come together and join the worldwide celebration as we raise a glass to Arthur and look forward with excitement to the next 250 years."
