Hey there a Big 209 - jittersElectro-pop band Hot Chip took to the stage to perform an exclusive DJ set at Village Underground in central London to launch Crisis Hidden Gigs, to raise awareness of the tens of thousands of hidden homeless people in the UK. In addition the band performed a low-fi PA set of previously unheard material from their forthcoming album to a sell-out crowd at the intimate venue.
Hot Chip were also were supported by legendary DJ Erol Alkan and London-based Man Like Me. The gig launched of the Crisis 'Expose the Truth: Justice not homelessness' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of th e lack of safety net for many people approaching their local authority as homeless - particularly single people without dependent children. They risk joining the ranks of countless thousands of hidden homeless people who sleep on the sofas or floors of family and friends, or live in hostels, bed and breakfasts and squats. Some are left with no option but to sleep rough.
Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: "As unemployment and repossessions soar more and more people approaching their local authority as homeless will find they only qualify for housing assistance if they tick the right boxes. We are calling for the safety net to be widened so that everyone who is homeless is entitled to at least short-term accommodation whilst they receive the help and support they need to get back on their feet."
The Crisis Hidden Gigs series continues with forthcoming gigs from indie legends Dodgy and The Bluetones on Sunday 17th May, Starsailor, Bombay Bicycle Club and Portico Quartet on 2nd June and Pendulum and Zane Lowe on June 17th. For tickets and further information visit www.crisis.org.uk/hidden
