Jazz Cafe Picnic 2006 Review

Foreign Beggars totally removed any disappointment for those who'd come to see the live funk crew, Breakestra, by being bloody brilliant themselves! They certainly got people dancing and standing to attention. Producer Dag Nabbit provided the interwoven bass, astral filter sweeps and futuristic warfare samples. While marvellous MCs Metropolis and Orifice delivered multi-syllabic rhyme patterns. On up-tempo double time track, Hot Plate, Orifice came in with his trademark triple time scissor rap style which totally blew the crowd away.

Next it was time to drop the tempo, as uber-cool Nouvelle Vague came on stage and beautifully knocked out French Bossa Nova versions of new wave classics such as Teenage Kicks and Making Plans For Nigel. This was obviously exquisite, especially when sipping from a glass of Kendermanns Pinot Grigio 2005, and eating strawberries. *hic*

Some sad news from compere Normski followed however, as he revealed the almighty Femi Kuti had been taken to hospital, so would be unable to perform. Our best wishes go out to Femi. However, his 24 piece collective band and dance troupe, the Positive Force were able to perform, and what an awe-inspiring performance! Here was a REAL taste of African Jazz, with spectacular dancers, stunning musicianship and brilliant beats. Picnic? This has turned into a joy-infused carnival right here! Magic!
