At the Eden Project in Cornwall, Peter Gabriel hosted a line-up of African artists, with Angelina Jolie taking to the stage to voice her support for the call to Make Poverty History.
The Pet Shop Boys performed in Moscow, whilst Nelson Mandela reiterated the event's pledge in Johannesburg, saying in a message beamed across the world:
"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.
"Of course the task will not be easy. But not to do this would be a crime against humanity against which I ask all humanity to now rise up."
