Lily Allen grabs UK chart number one with Smile

Says Lily:

"A lot of female artists, and male ones for that matter, are boring singers who don't say anything. Certainly not to my generation. With the kind of music I do you have to be direct and quite literal. I don't play an instrument, which really makes me focus on the vocal melody, and the lyrics are incredibly important to me. I'll beat myself up for ages over one line because I don't feel that the song flows as a story. Pop should be popular, but exciting and interesting, like T.Rex and the Clash. Steps and S Club 7 shouldn't have been called pop - they should have been called shit."

Meanwhile, in the UK singles chart, previous front runners Nelly Furtado and Sandi Thom slipped down the chart, with Nelly's Maneater falling to number four, and Sandi's I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker falling to number six. Razorlight, climbed to number three with their briliant new single, In The Morning. New entries in the chart this week included 19 year old Paolo Nutini with Last Request, who went straight in at number five (check back soon for our interview with Paolo) plus Bob Sinclar Ft Steve Edwards World Hold On (children Of The Sky).

Muse have claimed the top spot in the album chart with their first new album in two years, Black Holes and Revelations. Lostprophets and Keane fell to five and four in the album chart respectively, both having been at number one in recent weeks, while The Zutons and The Kooks climbed the album charts. Inside In/Inside Out rose to number two while Tired Of Hanging Around rose to number three.
