Having signed a $120m (£75m) deal with Live Nation in 2007, Celebration marks the end of the global pop star's 27 year relationship with record label Warner Brothers.
The album is Madonna's 11th number one in the UK and brings together 36 tracks spanning her career so far, including Revolver, a newly recorded song featuring Lil Wayne.
Matching Elvis Presley's record of 11 number one solo albums, Madonna continues her reign as the most successful female solo artist of all time. With the most weeks at the top of the album charts (29), the most number one singles (13) and the most chart doubles for topping the singles and album charts simultaneously (4). The Beatles hold the record for most UK number one albums, with 15 chart toppers to their name.
Last weeks' number one album, The Resistance by Muse, charted at number two. This was followed by a new entry at number three, Tongue N' Cheek, the second album from UK rapper Dizzee Rascal. A new entry also followed at three, The Boy Who Knew Too Much by Mika. Peter Andre completed the top five with his album Revelation.
