Sarah Christine: ilikemusic because... Music is like a puzzle. Each peice by itself is unique and looks like no other puzzle peice, but when you put it all together, you expeirience a completely different picture. Lockoutmusic: ilikemusic because... it can be personal to every indivdual. The meaning of the lyrics can be moving and also relaxing. The first music from the forthcoming Sigur Ros album, 'Takk…', will be a download of the track 'Glósóli' to be released by EMI Records on Aug 15.
'Glósóli' is the perfect introduction to the fourth instalment in the Sigur Ros story, represented by 'Takk…'. Whereas much of the last untitled album was characterised by dark and slow-moving introspection, 'Glósóli' is immediately flooded with light, its airy vocals swooping like swallows on a summer's day, accompanied by the soft tintinnabulation of tiny bells.
Driven along by no fewer than three bass drums - providing a sound akin to a small troop marching in gravel - and Jonsi's commanding bowed guitar sound, 'Glósóli' almost imperceptibly plots its upward course. Then, at the three-and-a-half-minute mark, the drums, break into a double-time trot and a real sense of rising tension pervades, as you find yourself swept along in the by-now rapidly increasing momentum.
Just when you think you can't hold your breath any longer and you must be approaching the top of the song, a dam-burst of guitar explodes over the top of everything, which itself then continues to edge ever higher, spiralling heavenwards in the final intense moments of the song. The experience could be described as cathartic. As a way in to the new material, it's certainly a palette cleaning exercise par excellence.
