Jo Whiley: ilikemusic because... It makes me laugh and it makes my cry and it gets me out of a stress if I’m in a stress, and, if I’m in a good place then it will make me in a better place. It’s all about the emotion, it’s all about the feeling where music takes you to and what affect it has on you.George Sampson, winner of Britain's Got Talent, has made more of an impact on the nation than he may have realised. The soundtrack to his winning performance, a remix of Singin' In The Rain, has shot straight to number one in the UK Singles charts.
In a re-working by the Manchester dance act Mint Royal, the title track from Gene Kelly's 1952 classic has found new life as it sits proudly at the top of the charts, without an umbrella in sight.
Last week the mix was at number 28 in the charts, but after Sampson wowed audiences with his breakdancing routine it has since jet propelled to number one. Knocking Rihanna's Take A Bow from the top spot after two weeks down to number two, The Ting Tings, That's Not My Name, followed at number three.
Duffy's Warwick Avenue dropped one place to number four and Ne-Yo's Closer was at number five. Number six and number seven saw a chart climb, with Sara Bareilles moving up to number six and Gabriella Cilmi in at number seven.
New entries came in the form of Morrissey at 24, Alex Gaudino at 25 and Maroon 5 featuring Rihanna at 29.
Radiohead featured in both the single and the album chart this week. Their Best Of album was a new entry at number four, whilst their famous single Creep came into the singles chart at number 37. 15 years ago this was a top 10 hit and is now currently back on the chart radar after the song's back catalogue was, for the first time, made available on iTunes last week.
The album chart is headed up by Paul Weller's 22 Dreams. The double CD shot straight to number one, followed by Duffy at number two and Neil Diamond at number three. With Radiohead in at number four, last week's number one album, Usher's Here I Stand, has dropped to number five.
The Zutons were another new entry in the album charts with their third album, You Can Do Anything, coming in at number six.
