UK DMC Championships DJ Skully

The Northampton heat of the DMC UK Championships on Tuesday 27th May, got hit by a blast from the past as former UK champion DJ Skully stepped back up to the Technics and stole the show. Beating off stiff competition from DJs Rasp(2nd) and Disect (3rd) Skully, who hasn't entered the competition since winning the UK DJ finals back in 2002, proved to a hometown crowd that he's been doing nothing but sharpening his trademark high speed technique during that time. The man himself had this to say about being back: ''It feels great to be back in the DMC's again, and I'm looking forward to pushing some turntable boundaries at the UK final in July''

Skully first shot to prominence by being the first DJ to win the UK Battle For Supremacy, an offshoot of the main championships where DJs compete head to head rather than in sequence. After winning that, and the finals in 2002 he went on to win the Diesel U Music Award for Best Scratch DJ and then focussed on production and mixtapes.

His best known compilation remains the classic 'Champion Sounds', released through DMC in 2003. Other recorded highlights include 'Focus Mode' with long time collaborator Klashnekoff and last year's 'Gully Breaks', which blended over 100 classic breaks with almost unrivalled precision. It's a pleasure to welcome one of the cornerstones of UK hip hop and a true pioneer back to the competition.

Skully will compete against all the other regional winners in the UK DJ Championships at Islington Academy on Thursday July 17th. The successful winner of the UK final will go through to the DJ World Championships with the cream of the crop from every continent on 26th and 27th of September 2008 at the Indig02 Arena.

This is the 23rd year for the competitions which has expanded from humble beginnings as a DJ mixing competition to becoming part of the bedrock of global hip hop culture. Forget the Olympics, forget Euro 2008, this global event is happening right here in London this summer!
