Unsigned Band Koopa Make Chart History

Essex punk pop/rock band Koopa have made chart history as the the first ever unsigned band to land a UK top 40 chart hit. Thanks to the recently introduced new chart rules, their download-only single Blag, Steal & Borrow entered the chart at number 31.

Koopa have been together for seven years and have no record deal but have grown in popularity via the internet and having played 500 gigs on the live circuit over the past three years. The new chart rules, introduced at the start of 2007 enable the sales of digital singles to count towards a chart position, regardless of whether their is a physical version available on CD (with a record deal supporting its release) or not.

Meanwhile, Leona Lewis, winner of X Factor 2006, retained her number one spot for a fourth week, with her debut single, A Moment Like This.

The highest new entry came from winner of BBC's Sound of 2007 survey, Mika, who charted at number three with Grace Kelly, his debut single. Eric Prydz vs Floyd held strong at number two with Proper Education. While Just Jack's Starz In Their Eyes single entered the chart at number four. Take That's Patience slipped to number five.
