Ventriloquist - I Know Kung Fu
Ventriloquist aka poet/producer Chris Redmond fuses smart, 21st Century spoken word with cunningly crafted songs and music. His spellbinding stories (fans include XFM's John Hillcock, Radio 1's Rob Da Bank and beatbox champ Beardyman) are skilfully sound-tracked by a 6-piece band featuring musicians from new jazz pioneers Nostalgia 77, Heritage Orchestra and Examples of Twelves.
'I Know Kung Fu' is the first Ventriloquist release to feature the full band and as the title suggests, it's not pulling any punches. Over a sparse latin/funk intro Redmond jumps straight in with a quirky story about schoolboys copying their Kung Fu film heroes. When the beat drops, it's a driving funk fuelled refrain, which builds menacingly under an increasingly uncomfortable plot. Violence, insults and thundering drums all come to a crashing explosive finish in a Bruce Lee meets Grange Hill kind of mash-up.
