It gives me an opportunity to truly express myself, unlike what happens in an everyday living situation where there are restrictions on you and limitations on you and demands on you and bills to pay, through music I can truly be comfortable with who I am, and do what I really want to do and say what I really want to say.

Ray, Alicia, Usher and Kanye
Top 47th GRAMMY Winners

Best New Artist nominee Joss Stone and Melissa Etheridge paid tribute to mutual idol Janis Joplin by evoking her soulful power with versions of two of her signature pieces: "Cry Baby" and "Piece Of My Heart." Etheridge took the bold step of performing bald, having lost her hair to chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer. This GRAMMY show was her first public appearance since finishing chemotherapy last month.

And Kanye West received a standing ovation for his Jesus Walks performance. He was then joined on stage by gospel greats, Mavis Staples, John Legend and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Kanye, who received the most nominations (10) and came away with three awards. The piano-playing rapper and producer says in his Through The Wire Track that "I'm a Champion. Turned Tragedy Into Triumph", after having a near fatal crash that meant he had to record part of the song through clenched teeth in his hospital bed. With a debut album (College Dropout) selling 2.5 million albums, and having been on production duties for fellow nominees, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, the Rock-a-fella artist has triumphed more than most.
