Berlin-based Apparat today releases new album Krieg und Frieden (Music for Theatre) through Mute.
The album has been based on Sebastian Hartmann’s theatre production of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. The renowned and innovative German theatre director was commissioned by famed German arts festival Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen to create the piece, subsequently enlisting Apparat to create the music.
The album was recorded with Philipp Timm (cello) and Christoph Hartmann (violin), who form part of Apparat’s live band. The result is a compelling ten tracks, traversing the boundaries of contemporary classical and electronic composition.
Not intended for release, the project was set to finish with the last performance of the play. Instead however, it was felt the full potential of the songs had not been reached as Apparat explains; "Because it evolved out of a process, and transformed all the time, there’s always been a certain freshness to it.”
