Building up to the highly anticipated release of his twenty-fourth studio album and first for ten years, David Bowie has unveiled the second single from new album The Next Day, with an accompanying video.
Directed by Floria Sigismondi and shot by Jeff Cronenweth, The Stars (Are Out Tonight) muses upon the meaning of fame as Bowie and British actor Tilda Swinton play a happily married couple whose world is intruded by a celebrity couple played by Andrej Pejic and Saskia de Brauw. Their androgyny and huge similarity to the young, forever iconic Bowie himself further escalate the artistic impact of the beautifully shot piece. According to Sigismondi, the aim of the video was to capture “a twenty first century moment in its convergence of age, gender and the normal/celebrity divide.”
The Next Day is released on March 12th 2013 via Columbia Records.
The Stars (Are Out Tonight) and lead single Where Are We Now? will be released as a limited edition 7″ vinyl for Record Store Day on April 20th.
