There is virtually nothing more satisfying than when a load of chords and words suddenly come together into a song ; suddenly everything in life seems to fit and make sense once more.

Brit Awards Review 2004

Backstage, Gwen Stefani, who's been with No Doubt for 17 years, announced that she's taking some time to do some solo stuff with Nelly Hooper and is aiming for a "White Lines - Grandmaster Melle Mel sound."

Later on, despite having his credit card rejected at the bar when trying to get some Cristal champers, The Darkness's Justin was in high spirits, with his band winning three awards - Best British Group, Best British Rock and, the one they all wanted, Best British Album. Frontman Justin Hawkins said: "It's a real privilege, a tremendous honour and a real achievement. I have to say we probably are the best British group."

The award for best British Urban Act went deservedly to the brilliant Lemar, who's had a string of souful hits since leaving Fame Academy. Lemar had been in the industry for years before he went into the Academy, which only slightly damaged his credibility, and this award validates him as a great urban British talent who can sing, write and deliver great songs.
