the band "still having our own songs and our own hair!" The singer is no less surprised. No one imagined we'd get quite as spectacular a reception," says Simon. "It's incredible. Our audience has come back to us. That's all we could hope for."
Roger admits that it "feels more right now than ever", and that "every decade there's a band who pull through - we're the band from the '8os." According to Simon, "This is the only job I ever wanted and I feel very lucky that I'm still able to do it." John acknowledges the challenges they've all faced since they reconvened at the start of the century. "It's not been easy. I would probably liken it to a family reunion - the dynamics between siblings. It's a perpetual drama. But we're all committed. I even got a Duran Duran tattoo at the start of all this, so even though there have been occasions when I've thought, 'Fuck this', I have to stay - I've got the tattoo!"
Despite the potential for conflict, they all agree on two things: that there is a chemistry from all five of them writing, performing and recording together that cannot be achieved alone, and that 'Astronaut' is the best album they've ever made - even better, as Simon claims, than 'Rio': "no spare words, nothing loose, no filler."
They may have, as John powerfully describes it, "had to rebuild an industry, a workforce, a brand" since that fateful day in the bassist's LA kitchen in summer 2000. But now it's a brand that is about to become as ubiquitous and synonymous with mid-noughties life as it was in the early to mid-'8os. It's the point of no return. Duran Duran are dead.
