Jacob Golden - On A Saturday

Fresh from an outstanding appearance on Later With Jools Holland where he performed a stunning version of Out Come The Wolves, Jacob Golden will be digitally releasing On A Saturday. The song which was recorded in Golden's bedroom in Portland, Oregon and inspired by his time in London, features the infectious closing refrain: "I want to sit and watch the girls in Soho Square, I fell in love so many times just sitting there."

It comes backed with a quite brilliant cover version of US punk band the Descendents' controversial/political track 'Merican, the lyrics of which run thus: "I come from the land of Ben Franklin/Twain and Poe and Walt Whitman/Otis Redding, Ellington/The country that I love/But it's the land of the slaves and the Klu Klux Klan/Haymarket Riot and the Great Depression/Don't get caught in Vietnam/The sickest joke I know."

On A Saturday has been taken from Golden's sensational second album Revenge Songs released in October 2007 on Echo. Golden wrote most of the songs on the album after he moved to Portland to do a regular job. Following spells hustling his wares in LA and London, he had turned his back on the compulsion to make music that's been with him since he started singing at the age of 10. "I was getting hung up on the career thing. The distance and perspective of Portland was an inspiration, and it made me realise that a musician is what I naturally am." He seldom bothers with recording studios, preferring, when he's away from home, the natural acoustics of underground car parks and a particular subterranean concrete art gallery. "I love the idea of making modern field recordings."

  1. Ellen, Los CampesinosEllen, Los Campesinos: ilikemusic because... It’s the best form of escapism that you can have wherever you are. You could be completely miserable or waiting for a bus and put on any song that inspires you and you can escape into a little world, well that’s what I tend to do anyway.

  1. Leon Jean-MarieLeon Jean-Marie: ilikemusic because... It transcends. It really creates emotion with someone. That feeling it gives you, it goes through boundaries. To create something, it just breaks through all the walls. When you connect with a song, that is it, that is magic isn't it?
  2. Master GeeMaster Gee: ilikemusic because... It gives me an opportunity to truly express myself, unlike what happens in an everyday living situation where there are restrictions on you and limitations on you and demands on you and bills to pay, through music I can truly be comfortable with who I am, and do what I really want to do and say what I really want to say.
