Julian Velard - Jimmy Dean and Steve McQueen
After receiving rave reviews for his limited EP 'The Movies Without You' on indie Lucky Number last autumn, Julian's first official single 'Jimmy Dean and Steve McQueen' is released on Charisma/EMI.
Brooklyn born Julian Velard's classic songwriting has already seen the twenty-something compared to legends Andrew Gold, Van Morrison and Harry Nilsson by media and tastemakers last year. High praise indeed but his honest magical tales of life and love - that saw him spotted on Myspace and signed in a whirlwind last summer - are proof enough of his gift for coining a blissful tune effortlessly.
Previously a student at LaGuardia High School (which cult show FAME was based on), a former sanitation worker in Paris, and a kindergarten gym teacher - he's finally found his calling in music, creating spellbinding pop nuggets for our ears.
Written by Julian during the hottest NYC summer on record, Jimmy Dean and Steve McQueen is brimming with tyre screeches, sleigh bells, baseball organ and handclaps, all backed by his whiskey soaked vocals. The perfect introduction to the singer songwriter, who cites influences as broad as Pee Wee Herman, Michael Jackson, Terry Callier, Supertramp, and of course Steve McQueen.
Former video delivery boy and self confessed movie addict - his classic psych piano pop is as inspired by the escapism of movies like The Never Ending Story as it is by the individual narrative of his heroes Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman.
'It is impossible not to be swept away by the strength of Velard's melodies.' The Guardian
'a kind of piano-bashing Elton and Harry Nilsson-inspired '70s rock n roll character who likes the showiness of Broadway while possessing a down to earth manner which brings him closer to Tom Waits.' Time Out
