Katie Melua joins Christmas Number One Race

The plot for Christmas Number One thickens as Katie Melua's charity duet with the late Eva Cassidy topped the UK singles chart this weekend.

Katie Melua heralds singer Eva Cassidy as one of her great inspirations. Eva Cassidy died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. Their version of Louis Armstrongs 'What A Wonderful World' is only available via supermarket Tesco - with all profits going to the British Red Cross.

The single stands at 5/1 odds for the Christmas number one spot, just behind Leona Lewis, whose debut album Spirit is expected to remain at the top of the album chart due to its astronomical mid-week sales.

However, the winner of The X Factor still stands as the most likely act to top the festive single charts.

Creeping in behind the pop scenes, Led Zepplin are putting up a fight with a significant increase in sales for their greatest hits collection 'Mothership'.

After the bands rock reunion on Monday their greatest hits collection was HMV's best selling artist album on Tuesday. According to spokesman Genarro Castaldo, sales of the groups back catalogue are up to five times their normal level.
