Melody Klyman - Sovereign
Hailed by key tastemakers and national press alike, Melody Klyman's recent single, Sovereign, has brought her early acclaim. Her debut album of the same name will be released this autumn through new British independent label, Blackwing Records, the UK home to American indie band Repeater and an imprint that seeks to follow in the footsteps of Mute and 4AD.
With echoes of This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Massive Attack, and Billie Ray Martin, Melody Klyman's shimmering songs are backed with glacial electronic production courtesy of Glen Nicholls (Sia, Prodigy, Yazoo, Unkle).
Canadian born UK based Melody trained as a classical pianist from the age of 6, spent time in an indie band in her native Canada and had been wooed as a solo artist by a major label early on (she quickly tired of being treated "like a product"). She has sung and written for a number of dance producers around the globe using an alias, picking up a gold disc and numerous plaudits along the way.
While Melody's writing exploits in the dance arena were successful, her true musical inspiration was reflected in her love of artists such as Kate Bush, This Mortal Coil, the Cocteau Twins, and all things 4AD. Wanting to make music that bore all of these influences she made a home in the UK, reinvented herself for a 21st century audience and stamped it with her own personality.
The album, Sovereign, moves from ethereal soundscapes and haunting electronica ballads to symphonic pop. With Nicholls' electronic instrumentation providing the perfect backdrop, each song is beautifully written and her characteristic vocal style delivers her well-crafted lyrics to great effect.

It gives me an opportunity to truly express myself, unlike what happens in an everyday living situation where there are restrictions on you and limitations on you and demands on you and bills to pay, through music I can truly be comfortable with who I am, and do what I really want to do and say what I really want to say.
