ASHUNDA: ilikemusic because... I like positive music for it leads the joys with lifePegi Young will release her self-titled debut album on March 3rd on Warner Bros. Records. The release of the album coincides with her UK tour as special guest to husband Neil Young.
Produced by Elliot Mazer and recorded at Redwood Digital Studio in California, the album features six original compositions by Pegi Young that highlights her previously undiscovered songwriting talent. Combining country rock with intimate ballads, the album is completed with a number of inspired covers from the likes of Joy of Cooking ('Sometimes Like A River'), Jimmy Buffett ('When The Wildlife Betrays Me') and Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham ('I'm Not Through Loving You Yet').
Pegi is backed by an all star roster of musicians on the album, most notably in the shape of Neil who contributes guitars, electric sitar, harmonica and vocals. Also featured are Ben Keith, Anthony Crawford, Spooner Oldham, Rick Rosas, Karl T. Himmell, Chad Cromwell and The Jordanaires.
"I've been writing songs and poetry since high school," she says. "It was something I'd always wanted to do but could never make time for. There were other things that took priority."
Young's greatest priority was co-founding The Bridge School for special needs children like her son Ben, born with cerebral palsy. She also raised a daughter, Amber, and toured the world as a backup singer with Neil Young, her husband of nearly three decades.
"I've been living five minutes from a state-of-the-art recording studio for twenty-five years," she says of the Northern California ranch she shares with her family. "But the timing had to align." With The Bridge School running well (Pegi is still president of the board) and her kids grown, Pegi finally had time to get into the studio. The result is a set of gorgeous songs that ponder the tug-of-war between love and independence.
Pegi Young will perform as guest to Neil Young at Edinburgh Playhouse (March 3rd), London's Hammersmith Apollo (March 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 14th and 15th) and Manchester Apollo (March 11th and 12th).
