Arctic Monkeys top 2006 best album poll

Arctic Monkeys have topped a poll to select the best album of 2006 with their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

The album's success owed much to the popularity of their first two singles, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and When the Sun Goes Down, which both topped the UK singles charts.

NME recently announced that the Arctoc Monkeys' album had been judged the best of the year by its readers, followed by Muse's Black Holes And Revelations and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Show Your Bones album.

Lead singer Alex Turner told the NME:

"We'd been up and down playing these songs and everyone had gone pretty barmy, but I didn't think that they were going to buy the CD. When we finished we were so proud that we'd made a record, it seemed secondary that it were a good one."

Previous NME poll winners include Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, and The White Stripes Elephant album.
