These aforementioned artists and music icons such as Hendrix were part contributors to a legacy that continues today to capture the hearts of everyone lucky enough to be part of the Isle of Wight Festival - bands, fans, locals and organisers alike. As documented in the film 'Message to Love' and celebrated in songs such as Oasis 'F***ing in the Bushes', the Isle of Wight Festival is a legend in its own right.
John Giddings, Solo, Festival Organiser said: "We would never have attempted to restart the festival without having such a strong history, the Isle of Wight was the Woodstock of Europe. I saw Jimi Hendrix there, and was proud to be offered the chance to contribute to the island's musical heritage. The unique location brings out the best in artists; it relaxes them and contributes to some stunning performances, just look at The Who live DVD from 1970. It only lasted 3 years in the 60's and we are on our 6th, so things are looking good!"
The Isle of Wight Festival takes place 8th - 10th June at Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight
Channel 4 will be broadcasting highlights from the festival throughout the weekend, including shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening (full TX details to follow)
