The Rolling Stones Headline Isle of Wight Festival

Unfortunately, the island could not withstand the impact of the festivals and the Isle of Wight Act passed by the Parliament, banned gatherings of over 5,000 people, putting an end to these affairs until 2002, when the festival returned to the island to work its magic once more.

Julia Margaret Cameron, the famous Victorian portrait photographer, lived at Dimbola Lodge from 1860 until 1875, where she photographed the cream of Victorian Society. The Julia Margaret Cameron Trust was set up with the aim of ensuring the preservation of Dimbola Lodge. Today at the Isle of Wight Festival, there is a unique exhibition at Dimbola Lodge, mainly containing rare posters, programmes, press cuttings, tickets, related memorabilia and photographs of the festival's history through the years. It also features multi-media recreations of the music and crowds of the iconic festivals, transporting you back to the 70's.

Set amongst the gardens of Dimbola Lodge, a life-size bronze statue of Jimi Hendrix acts as a permanent memorial to the legendary performance from Hendrix at the 1970 festival, and to commemorate his last UK performance before his untimely death. The statue is set amidst a specially planted meditation area, and dressed just as he was in 1970 when he brought his 'message to love' to the island.
