As the follow-up to the band's second album, 2007's Escape from L.A., Phoenix sees Orange's return to their trademark brand of power-pop punk.
"Not many people know this, but a year ago Orange was pretty much done,"
said frontman and bassist Joe Dexter about the recent departure of the band's original rhythm section. "The whole thing just felt kind of over, but I couldn't let that stop me." Instead of calling it quits, Dexter and drummer Zak Glosserman invited musicians to join Orange creating a newer, brighter, fresher band.
Produced by Gavin MacKillop (PiL, Sugarcult, MXPX, Toad the Wet Sprocket) and recorded at Mad Dog Studios in Burbank, CA., the 12-track Phoenix sees Orange broadening their spectrum and drawing on diverse influences to stretch themselves musically and lyrically, mixing genres and creating a unique sound most notable on the first single Standing Still. The band still knows how to have fun, however, and old school Orange fans definitely won't be disappointed by Everything I Need, Happening Today and Sunday Night. All three tracks are laced with outstanding choruses and all are utterly anthemic and optimistic, while The Clash-influenced rocker Desperation shows a darker side of Dexter.
The album closes with a powerful cover of Lou Reed's classic Perfect Day
which sums up the entire record perfectly. Phoenix takes you on a wonderful journey from start to finish--one that even the toughest of hearts will be more than excited to take again and again.
Orange was formed in 2002 and spent the next few years carefully crafting their own unique style of energetic and playful punk'n'roll. In 2004, when the band was the average age of 16, they caught the ear of Operation Ivy/Rancid mastermind Tim Armstrong, who signed them to his Hellcat label soon after. A year later they released their debut album Welcome To The World of ..., followed by Escape From L.A. in 2007, both of which were critically acclaimed and widely accepted within the punk rock community.
