The Rakes kicked off the opening night of the NME Freshers Tour with a fantastic 45 minute set that consisted entirely of songs from their debut album 'Capture/Release'.
The evening boasted a strong supporting cast with Five O'Clock Heroes kicking off proceedings with a string of no-nonsense power-pop tunes; catchy to the point that it pricked the ears of those still lingering at the bar.
FOCH might have displayed a few first night nerves during their most high-profile gigs to date, but this is a band only two singles into a potentially promising career and still finding their way.
And so from power-pop to power-pomp...
Louis XIV cannot under any circumstances be described as a band grappling with their own self-doubt.
In principle there's much to dislike about Louis XIV; but like a glammed-up Jet with eyeliner and haircuts they've actually paid for, they couldn't fail to crank up the atmosphere a notch with a good time set of stomping glam rock silliness. Chucking water over scantily clad girls in the front row didn't fail to endear them to this (male) ilikemusic.com writer either.
