Beverley Knight Live in Portsmouth

I've been to many gigs before this one where the audience was only interested in the artist's most recent work; not here though, where each of the 1000 or so gathered seemed individually intent on having the time of their life, almost regardless of the music.

From the heartfelt tale of "Shape Of You", through the audience participation of "Greatest Day" - complete with harmonics experimentation - to the relatively upbeat outlook of "Bestseller Mystery" there was never a beat missed.

Out of nowhere came the poignant and respectful tribute of "Fallen Soldier", written in the wake of Steven Lawrence's early 90's murder, and subsequently dedicated to the death of Damilola Taylor. From the accentuation in her voice, it was easy to decide that Beverley pays more than just lip service to her dedications.

To pick the pace up again, "Moving On Up (on the right side)" followed, before the even more upbeat "Beautiful Contradiction" which saw the return to stage of Shaun Escoffrey. Indeed, the two of them were beautiful together, to the extent that it's difficult not to imagine them making out after the show.
