Beverley Knight Live in Portsmouth
From the crowd's reaction, "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" was the track they'd been waiting for. As her most recent hit - an easy-to-relate-to tale of choosing between your partner and some other aspect of your life - this was hardly surprising. Neither was the strength or power with which the track was performed.
With the crowd satisfied, it seemed to be time for fun. Through the mighty sound system came, with distinct reggae undertones, the recognisable chords of another Diva, albeit from the world of pop rather than R&B. Kylie's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was dispatched with ease, much to the crowd's delight.
The only place left to go from there was to introduce the folk who'd helped her gain such universal respect through the course of the evening. After introduction, many of the band were recognisable as having been mingling with the crowd ahead of the gig.
Meanwhile, award winning DJ Pogo was warming up in the background ahead of a fierce Chaka Khan vs Britney Spears mix. Regrettably and, it seemed, much before time, this saw the conclusion of the gig proper. But with the audience as receptive as they were, there was never any doubt about the presence of an encore, and BK did not disappoint with not one but two which included her own hits "Gold" (released 24/06/02), "Wild", and "Get Up"; followed by a tasteful cover of Coldplay's "Trouble".
It was at the end of this that the crowd departed, satisfied, impressed and pleased that this is one performer who lives up to all her expectations.
