Corinne Bailey Rae and Beyonce Big Winners At MOBOs
Corinne Bailey Rae and Beyonce were the big winners at the 2006 Music of Black Origin Awards (MOBOs). Beyonce picked up three awards at last night's glamourous bash at the Royal Albert Hall, whilst Leeds' favourite Corinne collected two MOBOs.
Corinne scooped the inaugural award for Best UK Female as well as the award for Best UK Newcomer, whilst Beyonce's No 1 single Deja Vu won Best Song and Best Video to add to her individual trophy for Best International Female.
However, much to the displeasure of the crowd, (who booed) Beyonce was not present at the show to collect her awards, neither was her boyfriend Jay-Z, who completed the couple double by winning Best International Male.
Other awards went to Sean Paul for Best Reggae, Rihanna for Best RnB and Steve Sutherland, who won Best DJ.
Miss Dynamite's brother Akala beat off stiff competition from Kanye West and Busta Rhymes to win Best Hip Hop whilst Black Eyed Peas won Best Group and Lemar continued his run of good MOBO form by collecting the trophy for Best UK Male.
Soul Man Sam Moore won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards were presented by a strange double act in the shape of comedienne Gina Yashere and rapper Coolio, and featured strong performances from Jamelia, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sway Lemar and Rihanna.
The awards were voted for by the Mobo academy, which has just been reorganised and includes 500 members of the public.
