Estelle - 1980
It's been a long wait, but it's certainly been worthwhile. Since signing to V2 / J-Did at the end of last year Estelle has been busy putting the final touches to her album and is ready to drop her first single.
Proving that ladies really are good at doing two things at once, Estelle combines raw and direct hip hop with a commercial slant that screams "crossover potential". With strong lyrics, easy-flowing vocals and a big-ass chorus, "1980" has radio play slapped all over it. Recalling her youth and how she came to where she is now, it's the perfect introduction to Estelle for those who don't already know her, and proof to those who do that she can indeed live up to the hype.
"1980" is a real life story about growing up and the things that make you who you are, both the good and the bad. Gruesomely dark stories of dead neighbours being eaten by their cats and setting their own houses on fire are as vividly recalled as kung fu films, Connect Four, the Cosby show and dancing to Kid n Play.
