The 'vertically challenged' female UK rapper who signed to Def Jam after impressing Jay-Z has her new single Love Me Or Hate Me out now.
I Like Music spoke to Lady Sovereign after her meeting with Jay-Z last year and asked her what advice she had for young people coming into the music industry.
"Don't do it if you're not ready for it," Lady Sov advised. "Don't expect to just sign to a major label and think its all piss easy. There is a lot of work behind it apart from making music. If your heart is in it then go for it man, and don't give up, but just be ready to tackle things that will come in your way, there's a lot of this, that and the other ya know. It's hard work."
And that hard work has paid of for Lady Sov who impressed Jay-Z with her lyrical rapping talent as well as her personality.
"I started telling a couple of jokes, like his side man is really short, so I was like "oi midget!", and he was laughing about it and he said that he loved my sense of humour and my personality and all that ... He didn't speak that much, he spoke but he was more paying attention to what I had to say ... it was mad. You know, like walking into that room and knowing that Jay-Z was gonna walk in was like, ahhhh! Oh my god! I don't normally get nervous, I get shy if anything, but I got nervous man. It's just something I never ever expected, I never thought about it, never thought about going to America, well I kind of thought about it, but never thought Jay-Z would be flying me over."
