The Herbaliser - Can't Help This Feeling
Can't Help This Feeling is the second single (and first 12"), taken from The Herbaliser's acclaimed new long player Same As It Never Was, released !K7
Alongside the title track in its original, a cappella and instrumental versions, the 12" also features radically different remixes by two highly respected UK-based artists from the cutting-edge of hip-hop and jazz, Beardyman and The Heliocentrics.
It also comes with a brilliant video showcasing the talents of Jessica Darling and reflecting the Herbaliser's live force.
Can't Help This Feeling is a typically upbeat blast of party-friendly funk-pop from Herbaliser founders Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba, a timeless R&B classic featuring the band's fabulous new recruit Jessica Darling on vocals. Over galloping beats and punchy brass, Jessica's voice aches with sultry longing and raw emotion, adding a modern sheen to the smoky soul-diva nostalgia of Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse and Nicole Willis.
Meanwhile, the two fantastic remixes are welcome reminders of The Herbaliser's roots in underground breakbeat culture. The first ever winner of the UK Beatbox Champion title two years running, Beardyman's "Glitchbox Hackjob" mix is a groundbreaking high-speed mash-up of vocal sound effects and human-beatbox acrobatics. Amazingly, apart from Jessica's original vocal, all these noises are generated by Beardyman himself.
This Brighton-based beat generator is already legendary for his dazzling live performances and hugely popular YouTube clip Kitchen Diaries. Besides hosting the acclaimed Battlejam club nights in London and Brighton, he has recorded and toured with Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Squarepusher and many more. Can't Help This Feeling is his first ever remix, and it is mind-bending genius.
Equally revered in their own genre-blurring musical cosmos, The Heliocentrics move the song in a totally different direction with their classy mix - an almost wordless, swirling cauldron of cinematic jazz and exotic rhythms. Formed by Malcolm Catto, a former drummer for DJ Shadow, this nine-piece orchestra weave Can't Help This Feeling into a lavish magic carpet where James Brown jams with Sun Ra, David Axelrod and Tony Allen. On board their psychedelic starship, The Heliocentrics take The Herbaliser to another dimension.
The Herbaliser are playing a headline show with a full band at The Scala in King's Cross on Wednesday November 5th 2008
